Extreme drought, multiple fires and limited resources prompt closure

From the Superior National Forest Service, Duluth, MN, August 21, 2021

Updated on August 25, 2021

The Superior National Forest is closing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, effective August 21, 2021, due to active and increasing fire activity, extreme drought, limited resources. The closure will be in place until Friday, September 3rd, and may be modified or extended as conditions allow.

This closure includes all lands, waters, trails, portages, campsite, canoe routes and Wilderness entry points in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Forest has notified permit holders and outfitters and is cancelling permits today through August 27. Permit holders will be fully reimbursed. At this time, all overnight paddle, day use and motorized day use is cancelled. The Forest will reopen portions of the Wilderness and/or some uses when it is safe.

We understand that this will have a significant impact on our visitors, cooperators and communities near the forest. This emergency closure is necessary for the safety of our visitors, our wilderness rangers and our fire-fighters. It allows our fire crews to focus on responding to existing fires and new starts.

Northern Minnesota is facing severe to extreme drought conditions. Active and increasing fire across the landscape. Yesterday, the John Elk Fire grew from 3 acres to 1600 acres and the Whelp Fire grew from 30 acres to at least 80 acres. The Forest has ordered a Type 3 team to respond to the John Elk Fire. Although the Greenwood Fire is being managed by a Type 2 Eastern Area Incident Management Team, forest resources are working with and assisting the team with the 9,000-acre fire. There are additional fires on the Superior and Forest staff are responding to initial fire starts and monitoring fires that are in controlled status including the Bungee Fire, Fourtown Fire, Sundial Fire, Moose Lake Fire, and the Clara Fire. Additionally, the Forest is monitoring the fires in Canada, which continue to show movement towards to the US border. The Forest is coordinating with Ontario counterparts on these fires.

The Forest also has a closure in place for the Greenwood Fire. Beyond that, the Forest is open to the public. There are 254 backcountry campsites outside the wilderness that offer remote paddling, camping and fishing. Here you can experience solitude without reservations, fees or permits and still have a fire grate and latrine. Many backcountry campsites are located on canoe routes outside the BWCAW. State forests and parks and county lands are also available for recreation.

The Superior National Forest also offers 23 developed campgrounds and 18 rustic campgrounds. Rustic campgrounds are free of charge and available first come, first served year-round. Fee campgrounds are open May – September and may be reserved at Recreation.gov. See the Forest website for more information.

For more information on the closure, please see the closure order. Thank you for your cooperation.

Evacuations West of Hwy 2, Posted August 20, 2021, 2:00 PM

This afternoon, August 20, the Greenwood Fire moved across Highway 2, crossing an area designated as a point for which evacuations would be triggered.  The Lake County Sheriff’s Department coordinated evacuations in the vicinity of Jackpot, East and West Chub lakes, and Slate Lake. The fire spotted outside the west fire perimeter in an area to the southwest of Stony Lake.  The fire paralleled Highway 2 before crossing the highway and moving nearly six miles to the north. There was substantial fire growth, the area of the fire is now estimated at 8,215 acres. As the front approaches, winds throughout the evening will be in the range of 20-25 mph; there is a possibility that occasional gusts may approach 50 mph around midnight.  The best chance for precipitation will be in the early hours tomorrow morning.  Winds will shift from the south – southwest to come out of the west – northwest as the weather front moves through the area.  Winds associated with the weather front are likely to produce fire growth and movement of the fire.  Strong winds will continue tomorrow.  Night operations will emphasize patrolling and monitoring of the fire.  Operations for tomorrow will emphasize fire fighter safety with the need to assess movement of the fire following the passage approaching weather front. Information regarding evacuations is available from Lake County Emergency Management at 773-844-6449.  Sign up for emergency text alerts at www.co.lake.mn.us/emergency-mangement/.

County Emergency Management announces first confirmed case of COVID-19 and issues helpful information on the virus, symptoms, and testing recommendations for residents affected by this new reality

MEDIA RELEASE

Emergency Management 99 Edison Blvd Silver Bay, MN 55614 218-226-4444 office 218-220-7811 cell BJ.Kohlstedt@co.lake.mn.us

MDH Confirms First Identified Case of COVID-19 in Lake County May 6, 2020 –

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) confirmed Lake County’s first identified case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) today. “The appearance of the virus in Lake County has been expected,” said Lake County Emergency Management Director BJ Kohlstedt. “Lake County Emergency Management and Lake County Health and Human Services have been working closely with the Minnesota Department of Health on preparation and mitigation efforts for several months.”

The infected person is an adult resident of Lake County in their 50s. MDH is working to identify and notify all those who may have come in contact with the infected person. Those people will be asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days from their exposure and will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms. No other information about the infected person will be released. The virus that causes COVID-19 is spread by respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how flu and other respiratory diseases spread, or when people touch surfaces that have been contaminated by an infected person and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. In hospitals, the increased number of COVID-19 patients has led to a higher demand for hospital beds. To enhance patient care, many facilities are now looking to explore recovery-focused bedding options for improved patient outcomes.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, headache, muscle pain (go to pain management doctor Forest Hills NY to find the best cure for it), sore throat, or loss of taste or smell. A cbd freeze roll on may also help relieve muscle pain. Not everyone with COVID-19 has all of these symptoms, and some people may not have any symptoms. People who do not have symptoms should generally not be tested for COVID-19. People who should be tested are those who have symptoms of COVID-19, especially hospitalized patients, health care workers, patients and staff in congregate care settings, dialysis and other patients including outpatients. MDH may also recommend that people get tested in certain situations, such as a setting where an outbreak is occurring.

In the State of Minnesota, the first case of COVID-19 was identified on March 6. As of today, 8,579 cases have been identified in 82 of Minnesota’s 87 counties, and 485 Minnesotans have died of COVID-19. It is important for people to understand that because testing capabilities have been extremely limited, the number of identified cases does not reflect the actual numbers of cases.

Accordingly, Kohlstedt stressed the importance of everyone strictly adhering to recommendations to stop the spread, which include: • Frequently washing your hands • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily • Covering your cough • Staying home especially when you’re sick • Avoiding unnecessary travel, and • Social distancing. As pest control is also part of cleaning. You can also contact experts from pest control new orleans to maintain a healthy garden.

A stay-at-home order, which directs Minnesotans to limit movements outside of their homes beyond essential needs, is currently in effect until May 18. That order may be extended by Governor Walz. While most cases of COVID-19 have reportedly been mild, these measures are necessary to protect older adults and those with underlying health conditions, like diabetes, lung disease and heart disease, that put them at a greater risk of severe illness.

“News of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Lake County brings with it a new reality for all Lake County residents,” said Rich Sve, Chairman of the Lake County Board of Commissioners. “Understandably, there are many concerns and some angst. In Lake County we have a strong sense of community and public good. Together we will see this through with positive results.” Chairman Sve also encouraged everyone to follow all of the recommendations to mitigate the risk of spreading this virus to our family, friends and neighbors and front-line essential workers.

For more information about COVID-19, please go to one of the following websites: • Lake County COVID Hub www.co.lake.mn.us • Minnesota Department of Health (State) www.health.state.mn.us • Center for Disease Control and Prevention (National) www.cdc.gov • World Health Organization (International) www.who.int The Minnesota Department of Health has set up a hotline for questions about COVID at 651-201-3920 or 800-657-3903. The hotline is available from 8 am- 6 pm every day.
