When was the last time you heard yourself on the radio?
For most of us it’s been a while, if ever. But Two Harbors’ own KTWH radio station is offering an opportunity for all of us to record their station identification that is required by the FCC at the top of each broadcast hour.
Saturday May 9, from 10am to 3pm, representatives of KTWH will be greeting you at the entry to Super One and inviting you to record the station ID together with your name and any other greetings of your choice (within FCC guidelines of course!) It will also be a chance to learn more about the station and its volunteers. Donations to the station are always welcome and earn a KTWH mug and/or bumper sticker premium, but a donation is not required to make a recording.
Once the station gets on the air this late spring or early summer we’ll be hearing our neighbors and ourselves regularly with each station ID as well as many of us doing our own programs. This would be a great time to submit a program idea or your own program proposal. Information is available at ktwh.org/programs or by writing THCommRadio@gmail.com, calling 834-2247, dropping a note to PO Box 622, TH 55616, or stopping by our studio/office in the Harbor Landing Building.
Meanwhile you can practice the legal station ID: “You are listening to KTWH-LP in Two Harbors, Minnesota”. “LP?” you ask? LP is for low power – KTWH will be broadcasting at 100 watts on 99.5FM.
Since the press release didn’t make it into the papers until last weekend, the steering committee of No-see-um RT has extended the application deadline to Monday, April 27 – so you haven’t missed your chance! Read on…
KTWH’s No-See-Um Radio Theater is NOW accepting applications for a Producer/Director. Details may be found in a press release coming out next week, or email us at thcommradio@gmail.com. A link to the application is below (.docx and pdf), return to us by email, mail (PO Box 622, TH 55616) or drop off at our studio/office in Harbor Landing, next to Jaws Computer Service. It is generally staffed in the afternoons.
Hurry! Deadline for producer applications is April 20th 27!
And – stay tuned for our next production auditions coming early in May! All ages 12 and up are welcome!
Coming to Two Harbors Saturday February 28, 7pm at the Harbor Theater!
Two Harbors Community Radio/KTWH is thrilled to bring you a true variety of local talent – music, storytelling and radio theater – at our first radio variety show. We hope this will become a regular event.
Part awareness-raiser, part fund-raiser, the tickets are reasonably priced at $5 to be sure you can come, and the popcorn will be free! But you are welcome to donate what you can to help us get on the air by later this spring.
Several local businesses have signed on as event sponsors for donations of $250 and more (check out their logos on the poster). But businesses may still be acknowledged as supporters for donations of $50 and up – all will be featured in the printed program as well as during the show, which is being recorded for future broadcast on KTWH. All sponsoring and supporting businesses will be acknowledged on our website after the event.
Businesses wanting to be recognized as KTWH supporters in the program should contact us by Monday, February 23, at THCommRadio@gmail.com, at 834-2247, or at PO Box 622, TH 55616. Most days there is also someone in our office/studio in the Harbor Landing building between 1 and 3pm.
We hope this is just the first of a regular schedule of radio variety shows, eventually to be broadcast live on KTWH 99.5fm. But be among the privileged few to witness the birth of a new cultural institution for Two Harbors this February 28!
Two Harbors Community Radio scores! Our carpet dreams come true!
Thanks to April Laakkonen’s scouting skills, Johnson Carpet One’s generosity, Shary Zoff’s pickup truck and Leo Babeu, Larry Ronning and Tom Koehler’s ingenuity and strong backs, KTWH is the happy recipient of 600 square feet of NEW carpeting today! (ask the experts from carpet cleaning grand junction for suggestions on choosing the best for your home) Why 600 square feet when half of our 540 square foot space is already carpeted? It will line the walls and floors of the studio and production rooms for sound deadening. For the best carpets, see the selection at J & D Oriental Rug Co. if you need the best carpets at the best price.

We sign a lease on the Harbor Landing future studio site (the office space between our former office and Jaws Computer Service); we elect Eddie Parke of Two Harbors to our Board of Directors, bringing his extensive experience in broadcast technology as well as nonprofit administration; and the Lake County Board of Commissioners approves our agreement to use a communications at the county garage for our antenna. We’re good to go!
2015 promises to bring us to the airwaves, likely sometime this spring. Most of the equipment is purchased but expenses still remain, including hiring an engineer to install our antenna and transmitter, studio construction expenses, music licensing, and streaming fees.
NOTE: Programmers will soon be contacted about their program ideas and beginning training once the studio is in place.”

In November, our effort to raise funds to put KTWH-LP on the air brought in $2,250 to our Raise the Antenna campaign.
Donations came primarily during Give to the Max Day, November 13 via GiveMN.org, as well as through contributions made on the ktwh.org website, and by folks sending checks by good old U.S. mail to PO Box 622, Two Harbors.
The campaign continues but we are so much closer because you gave when we asked. You all share a place in our grateful hearts this Thanksgiving season!

THCR is thrilled to announce that we are recipients of a generous Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation grant. After nearly three years of preparation, planning and countless volunteer hours, the effort to bring a community radio station to Two Harbors is now becoming a reality. A portion of the $20,000 award will help purchase nearly 75 percent of the basic needed equipment needed to get KTWH-LP 99. 5 FM on the air. Studio space rental and operational costs are also priorities to be funded from the award.
Michelle Ronning, fundraising chair of THCR expresses her gratitude,
“Thanks to the generosity of the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, local businesses and especially the individual support, we will raise the antenna for your community radio.”
We are in fact rolling out the “Raise the Antenna” campaign this week to help get KTWH-LP (low power) on the air by summer of 2015. Now your individual contributions to THCR mean more than ever. Of course, we realize many of you have been volunteers, financial contributors, and steadfast bearers of local good will for this effort, for which we are ever grateful. However, much hinges on our ability to raise the remainder of the money we need to purchase and install the studio and transmitter/antenna equipment.
You may easily click here to donate on this website or at the Donate tab on the home page or by visiting our THCR offices in the Harbor Landing Building at 7th Avenue and 7th Street, Two Harbors hours are Monday through Thursday, 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Checks made out to THCR can be sent to THCR, PO Box 622, Two Harbors, 55616. Our phone contact is 834-2247.
There is even more to update you on:
Tuesday, September 30, was a successful night of introductory information sharing and training exercises for some of the roster of people interested in being on air at KTWH-LP. We expect to have more training sessions yet this year. Remember to submit your program ideas on the Programs page of this site, even if preliminary, so that we can keep in touch with you about your proposal and let you know about upcoming programmer training.
We are working out details for our studio and transmitter locations. We will post more updates soon as agreements are settled for these locations.
We continue to seek volunteers for committees, radio theater, working with our youth training, important archiving and clerical work, and many other on- and off-air tasks that will need doing to make Two Harbors Community Radio a “sound” operation. Let us hear from you!
Working together toward our goal of $25,000 for start-up equipment, your support in the form of a tax-deductible donation can earn you these premiums:
