It’s been a busy year at Two Harbors Community Radio as we celebrate our ninth year as your radio with a lake view at 99.5 FM, online at ktwh.org. We just wrapped up four fun KTWH Catch the Wave concerts on September 8th- we hope you caught a show or three of a wonderful variety of local talent playing outdoor concerts at the bandshell in support of community radio.
To support more hard-to-forget radio moments, please help KTWH during our annual Fall Membership Drive- it’s as easy as going online to click Donate on the ktwh.org homepage, or calling us during the Drive at 218-595-6195 to pledge a gift, or even mailing a check to us at PO Box 622, Two Harbors MN 55616. You can also stop by the station in the Harbor Landing to drop off your gift- have coffee and a treat and tour our humble community radio hotspot.
It’s been said that we all do better when we all do better. KTWH is working to make things better. That has to include sharing community voices and concerns in a constructive way, a commitment that KTWH takes to heart every day. We’re covering this year’s area elections and the issues that affect the north shore. You can help us maintain that focus with your gift … consider becoming a sustaining member of KTWH by making a modest monthly gift to provide year round support. All new sustainers will get a cool KTWH decal.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND INPUT!!!!
Choose to become a new KTWH member today, or maybe renew your past membership support. That would mean a lot to our radio team. KTWH staff are focused on delivering local voices that can make a difference in our communities. And music, lots of sweet music, including lots of local artists and live music as often as we can make it happen.
Now through the first week of October, it’s a great time to give whatever amount you can afford to help Two Harbors Community Radio continue bringing our area 5,000 hours of adventurous programming each year.
Thanks to all of you who support Radio With a Lake View.
You make KTWH happen!

In the fall of 2022 KTWH started running a series of conversations with Gooseberry Falls State Park Naturalist Michaela Rice. A Minnesota born wildlife biologist, Michaela has embraced many venues for reaching out beyond visitors to Gooseberry to share insights and wonders of the seasons on the North Shore with the local community. We hear reports of what she is observing in the park as well as across the area’s shorelines, fields, lakes and streams, forests and skies.
Check out Wandering Nature News every other week on KTWH, almost always in the 8 am hour during Leo Babeu’s Across Divides morning variety program. Topics range from what’s blooming to how the birds know when to migrate, to fun facts about creatures great and small, and concerns for the health of our forests and waterways. Sometimes we’ll invite special guest resource experts on diverse topics that have ranged from loons to removing lead from our outdoor gear, from feral hogs to forest health. The conversation takes many turns as we sometimes migrate into environmental topics like climate change and threats from invasive species We always keep our eyes and ears on the phenology highlights radio listeners can find in every Northland season. Hear it only at 99.5 FM or streaming online at ktwh.org.

The KTWH Early Bird Membership Drive welcomes online giving- this drive runs from April 27th (or before) through May 5th. The on-air Spring Membership FUNd Drive kicks off Monday May 6th. By the way, it won’t be too late to give through the month of May if you’d like to help KTWH after the drive technically is over.
Giving your support during the Early Bird Drive will help us meet our Member goal sooner and Early Birds will have the chance to match the $1,000 dollar challenge gift made by an anonymous KTWH supporter.
Stay tuned for updates about several exciting FUNd Drive special programs: We’ll have a bonus Beat Farm show and even highlights from this year’s exciting Cabin Fever Reliever show. If you haven’t discovered it, yet check out our Listeners’ Voices show (Saturday at Noon with a repeat Monday at 9 PM). We’ll be soliciting your thoughts on community radio the week of the Drive. You can look forward to some other dynamic shows premiering in the coming months AND more KTWH Catch the Wave concerts this summer at Two Harbors downtown band shell park. Bringing you grassroots radio year round only happens with listener support. That’s where we hope you come in, whether as a monthly sustainer or annual donor at any level that you can afford.
If you’re ready and able to contribute to KTWH, it’s as simple as going to https://ktwh.org/donations/ to enter the secure KTWH Donation page. You’ll see your giving options and premiums.
KTWH celebrated EIGHT YEARS in September 2023. It’s been amazing to take this journey with the community we serve. Listener support is the biggest single component of our noncommercial radio budget. And thanks to your continued support KTWH is able to produce shows that feature local voices, issues, and stories. We also air a wide range of independently produced shows from across the country to complement the menu of local music programming and public affairs features throughout the week for over 5,000 hours each year.
A gift of any amount to KTWH lets us know that you support community radio for the long haul. That’s our commitment-to be there for the listeners who value this service. Becoming a monthly sustaining member is a great way to help KTWH over the course of the year. That’s easily done by clicking the Donate button on our home page at our website, ktwh.org.
The mission of KTWH as a grassroots nonprofit radio service is to reflect our community and share the many voices of the people who make this place home, or even a home away from home. Your support goes a long way to make sure we can maintain our technical systems and the ambitious programming– we continue to recruit and train folks to produce and reliably deliver a diverse menu of programs at KTWH.
You can make a donation in any amount that works for you right now–go to the donate page at ktwh.org and check out the premium thank you gifts and easy payment options. There are several ways to give:

Catch Cabin Fever and feel good doing it!
Two Harbors Community Radio (KTWH-LP) is thrilled to present our 8th in-person Cabin Fever Reliever at the Two Harbors High School on Sunday, March 10. A very special addition to our benefit performance for KTWH this year is the Native Nations Expo in the Great Hall from 1-3 pm. Cabin Fever 2024 is a celebration of regional musical talent, indigenous culture in the Northland, and community radio. Families will enjoy the Cabin Fever Reliever Variety Show in the auditorium from 3-5 pm. We’ll welcome singer, songwriter and story weaver John Sonofmel (Master of Ceremonies), David Huckfelt, The Oshkii Giizhik Singers, Michael Laughing Fox Charette, and Edward Ojard.
Advance tickets, $15 each or $35 Family, are on sale now at KTWH.org–click the Pre-sale Tickets button on the homepage– and in-person starting February 9th at Cedar Coffee Company and the KTWH studios. Tickets are $18 at the door, day of the event. The doors open at 1 pm for the Expo and free treats will be available to all before the show. Coffee will be for sale from Cedar Coffee Co.
Tribal agencies and community members will participate in the Native Nations Expo, a culturally themed outreach event taking place before the live show in the Great Hall of Two Harbors High School. We’re so pleased that the Lower Sioux Indian Community will come to show people their energy efficient Hempcrete building products. What a cool innovation! MN Historical Society, Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), The 1854 Treaty Authority and John Beargrease’s great-grandson Mike Keyport and the Beargrease Sled Dog Race folks will be among the Expo participants.
Here is a snapshot of the acts appearing at Cabin Fever 2024 (click on photos to change size):
John Sonofmel. Voted 2017 “One Week Live” Singer/Songwriter of the Year- Wussow’s Music Cafe, formerly Beaners. “Dylanesque songwriting delivered with a voice like Johnny Cash.” –Jeffrey Jones, WOJB Music Director, Hayward, WI. “Sometimes it takes traveling far from home to find out where one comes from. From Baku to Berkeley, Anchorage to Ankara, Sonofmel brings the foreign home to the familiar, piling prodigal wanderings and fistfuls of chords into spoken word, stories, and song.” – Sonofmel
Oshkii Giizhik Singers (OGS) is a group of Indigenous women singers and hand drummers from Northern Minnesota. Founded in 2006, the group has had dozens of Native women and elders from the region sing and share teachings over the years. OGS was the first women’s drum group to receive a “best traditional recording” NAMMY award in 2009 with their album, It’s A New Day For Love and credit that distinction to the many women’s drum groups that paved the way for them.
Michael Charette (Laughing Fox) is an artist, musician, writer and performer and a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). As a self-taught Native American flute player, he enhances his stories with flute music and storytelling performance. Growing up surrounded by the beauty of Lake Superior and the Woodlands led him to dedicate his gifts as an artist teaching about Indigenous history, culture, and heritage. His work as both a visual and performance artist is varied and tied together by the traditional wisdom of the Anishinaabe people, which is respectfully incorporated into his work. Tales of Laughing Fox are Native American Cultural Demonstrations that consist of stories, culture, history and music from the Anishinaabe Peoples. With over 20 flutes in his collection, each with their own story voices and song, Michael weaves traditional storytelling with his own experiences. Tales of Laughing Fox performs all over Turtle Island and beyond, recently returning from a trip to York, England.
Laughing Fox currently has Native American flute Music albums available:

Edward Ojard aka “Eddie” of Two Harbors began playing piano at age 3, composing at age 4 and has become a highly accomplished 15 year old pianist & composer. Eddie’s musicianship continues to advance through his study of piano and music theory, which earned him the highest score and special honors in recent statewide piano comprehensive exams. Eddie’s success in the American Protege Piano Competition earned him a spot performing at Carnegie Hall in December 2023. Along with music competition, high school classes, and being a Two Harbors High School JV basketball player, Eddie is busy preparing to release his 5th original music CD.
Community radio provides an outlet for diverse voices, talents and stories from across our area. The Cabin Fever show reflects the range of ages, tastes and talents you’ll hear daily on KTWH-LP.

About Give to the Max Day
Give to the Max Day was created in 2009 to launch GiveMN, a collaborative venture led by Minnesota Community Foundation and many other organizations committed to helping make our state a better place. That initial spark touched off an outpouring of generosity — $14 million in 24 hours.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2023, Give to the Max Day has become Minnesota’s annual giving holiday, raising $290 million in its first 14 years. Every year, thousands of organizations and individuals generate donations and excitement for Minnesota causes that are working to improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans.
Give to the Max Day has become a national model for giving days.
About GiveMN
GiveMN is an independent nonprofit organization working to ignite generosity and grow giving through GiveMN.org, Minnesota’s giving marketplace, and RaiseMN, a fundraising coaching and training program.
Since 2009, more than 730,000 donors have made gifts with ease and enthusiasm through GiveMN.org to make a difference for causes in their communities. Through this online marketplace for generosity, and giving events like the annual Give to the Max Day, GiveMN has helped to generate more than $380 million for more than 14,000 nonprofits

The Rural Voice series, developed by several Minnesota Initiative Foundations that serve Greater Minnesota along with the Otto Bremer Trust and Compeer Financial, continues in September and October with four town halls moderated by Minnesota Public Radio’s Kerri Miller. This year’s conversations will focus on how rural communities are lifting up entrepreneurism and addressing looming challenges such as the shortage of affordable housing, educating the next workforce, and raising awareness about mental health and social isolation.
Additional partners to this year’s Rural Voice series include Minnesota Public Radio, Cherry Road Media, and the Center for Rural Policy and Development.
KTWH-LP has teamed up with the Lake County Press and Two Harbors Media to locally promote the September 19th Rural Voice Town Hall forum on affordable housing challenges and solutions. This forum will be held at Castle Danger Brewery, with doors opening at 6:30 PM, the forum running until 8:30 PM. KTWH will broadcast and stream the forum audio live starting at 7 PM at 99.5 FM and ktwh.org, and also live video stream the event on the KTWH YouTube channel.
Special thanks to Two Harbors Media and Jose Leon for making these live feeds possible. If you don’t attend, please listen or view the forum; KTWH intends to have the event archived at ktwh.org. Thanks as well to the Lake County Press for helping to host and promote the event.
Just a reminder: the public can attend this free forum but space is limited. Please register online HERE.
Minnesota Public Radio will feature content from the discussions in segments later this fall.
