It is indeed Heritage Days week in Two Harbors! And we will be broadcasting live for the first time from our station’s Heritage Days booth on Friday and Saturday, and from downtown Two Harbors during the Saturday parade.
Thanks to equipment the station acquired through support from the LaBounty Family Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, KTWH will be broadcasting over four hours of special programming live from Two Harbors’ biggest community event.
On Friday July 7th listeners can tune in at noon for a Heritage Days Download/Preview with co-hosts Jackie Rennwald and Michelle Miller. At 1:30 on Friday the High School Show crew, anchored by youth radio producers Jackson Leon and Sam Knight, will be broadcasting their show live, with a special guest, from the KTWH booth.
On Saturday July 8th there will be a historic and unpredictable culinary uproar when Chef Uriah Hefter broadcasts his Hot Dish Imperative from the KTWH booth at 11am. You can join him in person or via the radio or internet as Uriah takes us on creative recipe adventures. This show will be cookin’ for sure.
The main event will be at 1 pm Saturday. If you can’t make the Heritage Days Parade in person (or even if you can – bring your radio!), catch all the action on KTWH, with Jackie Rennwald and Big Dave Anderson providing colorful commentary about on this most eagerly anticipated cultural tradition. They’ll capture the audio essence of all the many people and groups that strut their stuff at Heritage Days.
Everyone is invited to visit the KTWH booth anytime July 7th through the 9th . It will be facing the Depot on the main drag of vendor village, #41. We will be recording memories of the people stopping by – memories of Two Harbors, of Heritage Days past, of your times spent in the area, family ties, and more. The volunteers and staff will be available to help record your recollections between 2 and 5 pm on both Friday and Saturday.
KTWH will also be hosting a door prize drawing in appreciation of everyone who has welcomed the station to town. Stop by the station’s booth and sign up for the drawing during Heritage Days. Winners will be drawn at random and announced during Monday morning’s Scenic Route show with Jackie Rennwald which airs from 7am to 9am on 99.5 FM, KTWH-LP, also heard online at ktwh.org.

KTWH will be airing an hour-long special, “Hugo Hellman, the Strongest Man in Brimson, in His Own Voice”, on Sunday May 28 at 7:00pm. It will be repeated Monday morning in what is usually the Classic Country Detour slot at 9:00am.
Hugo shares a lot of history about growing up in Brimson/Toimi and making a living there in an interview done in August, 2015. You also get to hear Hugo’s daughter Gerri on the accordion, recorded about the same time at the Brimson Farmers’ Market which happens Saturday mornings during the summer at Hugo’s in Brimson. Don’t miss out on this special program about this special man.
We expect to have the program posted here on our website later in the Memorial Day week – check back to listen at your leisure.
Our special program on Mothers’ Day of dedications to mothers from kids aged 12 to 78 was so well received, we decided to post it here for the appreciation of all. While listening, think about creating your tribute to a father in your life for Fathers’ Day – coming right up on June 18!

There are so many ways to honor mothers on Mothers’ Day – flowers, candy, a card, a special meal or gift, even a billboard!
Two Harbors Community Radio is offering a novel way to show appreciation for the mothers in our lives this year. Your message to a mother, whether your own, the mother of your children, or any woman who has made a difference to you, may be broadcast on KTWH 99.5FM this Mother’s Day, Sunday May 14.
Your message can be delivered in three different ways: record the message yourself in the KTWH studio by appointment, send a sound file you have recorded on your smart phone or other device, or send the station a written message to be read for you. Maximum length is 30 seconds or about 75 words.
The deadline for submissions and studio recording sessions is noon Saturday, May 13. Messages received before Thursday, May 11 will also be broadcast during that morning’s Grounds Control morning show with Michelle Miller, between 7 and 9am. Personal messages such as birthday greetings, graduation congratulations, etc. maybe broadcast any day on KTWH for a $10 donation. In the case of Mothers’ Day (and Fathers’ Day of course!) however this service is offered free to listeners in appreciation of their support.
On March 25, KTWH’s Saturday Morning Mix aired a special hour devoted to encounters with bears and bear dens. Hosts Fran Kaliher and Peg Zahorik talked about a den they recently visited in northern Wisconsin where they recorded the sounds of the infant cubs and their mother from outside the den, without ever seeing the bears of course. These are some of the sounds recorded on two different occasions, January 28 and February 12 of this year.
The first one records the cubs “squalling” = trying to get comfortable, squirming around, sounding a bit like ducks squawking!
This one includes some squalling, then some “chumming” = nursing sounds, not the suckling itself but a sound they make while swallowing the milk; periodic short breaks for a gasp of air, every 3-5 seconds. Sounds like a motor running, or a car trying to start.
Two different cubs chumming, two different “pitches” or frequencies
Cubs squalling with occasional deep breaths/snores from the mother: listen for these at 5 seconds, 36 seconds and 1 minute. Also a grunt or belch from the mother at about 44 seconds.

Starts out with a lull in the action, relatively quiet, panting of cubs, slowly ramp up into chumming interrupted with gasps of breath, mother’s breathing at 8 seconds, 24 seconds and more

KTWH radio personality Kristina Rafn takes the audience to school with a two-part documentary presentation detailing the evolution of punk rock from its 60’s art scene roots, its exportation to the UK where it went supernova, and its influence on mainstream culture.
Each one-hour segment is a separately produced program and will follow Ms. Rafn’s regular Sunday 8-9 PM Digital Vinyl timeslot over a two-week period starting June 12th.
The first installment, The Pioneers of Punk, explores how Andy Warhol’s NYC art scene was embraced and transformed by that city’s economically disaffected youth during the 70’s.
In Part two, The Punk Invasion, the nascent genre getting no American airplay in the era of Disco, finds a home in the UK and evolves into a worldwide phenomenon.
Ms. Rafn, an avid music fan of alternative music since her late 80’s childhood, sees punk as being more than the soundtrack for protest, “When people think about punk, they think angry British people with Mohawks, but to me, punk is fun happy music.” Kristina also finds it empowering. “One of my favorite things about punk music is the place women hold in it. All-female bands like Mudwimin, Frightwig, Tragic Mulatto do not fit into the stereotypical sex goddess role. Punk audiences aren’t looking for glam, they want someone with an opinion that can rock.”
Digital Vinyl is a Two Harbors Community Radio produced weekly presentation of Kristina’s favorite upbeat alternative and punk rock classics.
KTWH is adding several new programs to its lineup in the weeks ahead. The team at Lake County’s first community radio station are excited about the new shows that will air soon, but are looking to expand its range of programming to more fully encompass the varied interests of the community. “While we are proud of our locally produced music programs and new programs are already under production, we still have some gaps in our offerings,” said THCR board member Fran Kaliher. “We are looking for team members to support a classic country show as well as polka, gardening, and a public affairs program about environmental and health care topics in our area. A timeless series of stories with an emphasis on the common threads that connect rather than divide us. People from all walks of life and ethnicities relay their stories of everyday life.
Southern Crossroads – Wednesdays at 10 AM
Transplanted Texan Zak Williams hosts a two-hour musical exploration on the influence of bluegrass and the blues in Southern Culture.
Two Harbors Community Radio brings our town its second annual variety show under very different circumstances this year. Last year we were still fundraising to “raise the antenna” – literally! We were successful and the variety show had a big hand in getting us ON-THE-AIR on September 13, 2015.
This year we are helping support on-going operations of our volunteer-driven community radio station with this fundraiser. It will be an enjoyable way for the community to support us while providing a platform for some of our local talent. The shows will not be broadcast live, but will be aired on KTWH 99.5FM/ktwh.org sometime this spring.
We have expanded to two shows, hoping not to have to turn anyone away at the door this time. There will be a 2:00pm matinee, tickets only $5, and a 7:00pm performance, tickets still reasonable at $8.

* The Hotdish Imperative! a cooking show by local chef Uriah Hefter – airs Thursday mornings at 11:00-12:00, often done live, and repeated Saturday mornings at 11:00. [Note: Left, Right and Center and Sprouts which had aired during this hour are now broadcast from 10:00-11:00 Sunday mornings, replacing reruns of The Book Show and Person Place Thing. Those programs still air at 12:05pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays respectively.]
* Spirit in Action – an interview program produced in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, about the spiritual roots of guests’ social activism, airs Sunday mornings 9:00-10:00. [Note – we replaced the repeat of Maternally Yours, which had aired during that hour. Maternally Yours still airs at 1:00pm on Mondays]
*Saturday Morning Mix has been running on Saturday mornings for several weeks beginning at 9:00. After a rundown of local community events and weather, it is comprised of local, regional and seasonal features of interest to our area, including interviews from the previous week’s Grounds Control morning show. Running from between one and two hours, it is sometimes followed by Storytime readings from Tom Koehler and/or other surprises chosen by the KTWH programming staff.
