A heartfelt Heritage Day thank you

i Jul 15th No Comments by

Two Harbors Community Radio would like to thank everyone who stopped by the KTWH Heritage Days booth to show their support this past weekend.

Many of those visitors were former residents who were pleasantly surprised that Two Harbors now has a real-time source for community news, severe weather information, music, and entertainment. A surprising number of these hometown visitors were already aware of the station and were frequent listeners via KTWH’s live streaming feature at ktwh.org.

THCR would also like to thank its many volunteers for the time and effort they contributed towards making Heritage Days 2016 a rousing success. Just as crucial as the volunteers who set up, maintained and staffed the Heritage Days booth were those who stayed behind to man the boards back at the station. It is this type of coordinated effort that makes possible the day to day operation of the station and the services it provides to the community.

A round of applause is in order for both Arna Rennan and Dave Anderson for their special participation. Arna, the host of Nordic Roots, christened the Heritage Days main stage with her performance of Scandinavian folk and dance tunes on accordion. Big Dave’s Beat Farm and his band of Beat Farmers endured the midday sun as they rolled through town dispensing good will and candy for children of all ages.

Congratulations are due to the three lucky winners in the Two Harbors Community Radio Heritage Days Prize Drawing:

● Taking home the all-in-one entertainment unit was Steven Keech.

● Brad Ronning chose the one night’s stay for two at The Inn at Gitchee Gumee.

● Winner of the John & Susanne Bathke donated loon artwork was Tim Lekatz.

For everyone we have yet to thank, such as content contributors, underwriters and the people who drop off baked goods at the station, etc., thank you for your support.

KTWH-LP, 99.5 FM, is a volunteer run non-profit serving the town of Two Harbors and surrounding area with a broadcast range of 10 miles. It streams online at ktwh.org. Big Dave’s Beat Farm airs Friday nights at 7 p.m. and repeats again Sundays at 3 p.m. Nordic Roots airs Mondays at 9 a.m. and again Saturdays at 3 p.m.

THCR Program Producer Presents Punk Pioneers

i Jun 4th No Comments by

KTWH radio personality Kristina Rafn takes the audience to school with a two-part documentary presentation detailing the evolution of punk rock from its 60’s art scene roots, its exportation to the UK where it went supernova, and its influence on mainstream culture.

Each one-hour segment is a separately produced program and will follow Ms. Rafn’s regular Sunday 8-9 PM Digital Vinyl timeslot over a two-week period starting June 12th.

The first installment, The Pioneers of Punk, explores how Andy Warhol’s NYC art scene was embraced and transformed by that city’s economically disaffected youth during the 70’s.

In Part two, The Punk Invasion, the nascent genre getting no American airplay in the era of Disco, finds a home in the UK and evolves into a worldwide phenomenon.

Ms. Rafn, an avid music fan of alternative music since her late 80’s childhood, sees punk as being more than the soundtrack for protest, “When people think about punk, they think angry British people with Mohawks, but to me, punk is fun happy music.” Kristina also finds it empowering. “One of my favorite things about punk music is the place women hold in it. All-female bands like Mudwimin, Frightwig, Tragic Mulatto do not fit into the stereotypical sex goddess role. Punk audiences aren’t looking for glam, they want someone with an opinion that can rock.”

Digital Vinyl is a Two Harbors Community Radio produced weekly presentation of Kristina’s favorite upbeat alternative and punk rock classics.

2nd Annual Cabin Fever Reliever – this weekend, February 27!

Two Harbors Community Radio brings our town its second annual variety show under very different circumstances this year. Last year we were still fundraising to “raise the antenna” – literally! We were successful and the variety show had a big hand in getting us ON-THE-AIR on September 13, 2015.

This year we are helping support on-going operations of our volunteer-driven community radio station with this fundraiser. It will be an enjoyable way for the community to support us while providing a platform for some of our local talent. The shows will not be broadcast live, but will be aired on KTWH 99.5FM/ktwh.org sometime this spring.

We have expanded to two shows, hoping not to have to turn anyone away at the door this time. There will be a 2:00pm matinee, tickets only $5, and a 7:00pm performance, tickets still reasonable at $8.

Check out the story in this week’s paper including the shows’ line-ups of all-local talent at:

We want to THANK our business sponsors, including Premier Sponsor Sonju Motors, as well as Judy’s Cafe, Danny’s Auto Body, North Shore Journal,  Thrivent Financial, North Shore Federal Credit Union, Granite Gear, Lake County News Chronicle, Two Harbors Federal Credit Union, and BuiltRite Manufacturing. They are helping make this fundraiser a great success!

New Year’s Day: Atz Kilcher on Dave’s Beat Farm

New Year’s Day: Atz Kilcher on Dave’s Beat Farm

Atz Kilcher, perhaps best known in this area as the main character of a successful reality show on the Discovery Channel, Alaska: The Last Frontier,  is also a master storyteller and renowned Alaska folk musician along with recording in the areas of country music and pop.  He will be in Two Harbors on New Years Day and appearing on Dave”s Beat Farm Friday evening. This special episode of the Beat Farm will start at 6:00pm and go until the usual 9:00pm. He is planning to write a song about Two Harbors for his appearance.
He and his first wife. singer Lenedra Carroll, are the parents of Songwriter/Singer Jewel.
Also appearing on the show are Dave’s and Atz’s mutual friends,  Pete Frothingham and Bonnie Rose from Arlington, Washington. Pete and Bonnie are accomplished singer/songwriters and were guests on a previous show recorded in July 2015 (not yet aired). Bonnie of course is a Two Harbors area native.
The link below is Atz and his daughter “Jewel” on (I think) the Grand Ol Opera,  doing the theme song from the show.

Watch for special programming around the holidays on KTwH! Besides special holiday episodes of some of our regular shows (such as Superior Jazz at 7:00 on Wednesday December 23), we will have an afternoon of live programming from our studios on Christmas Day, beginning at noon. Big Dave Anderson of The Beat Farm will host the collection of alternative holiday music including non-holiday music, for the holiday-weary. We are working on live musician guests and will have some seasonal stories. Keep tuned for details…

Nov 12 – Day of Special Programming for Give-to-the-Max

Nov 12 – Day of Special Programming for Give-to-the-Max

i Nov 7th No Comments by

Now eight weeks into its broadcast life, KTWH community radio is planning to celebrate its existence with a day of special programming on Thursday, November 12, including the debut broadcast of  last winter’s Cabin Fever Reliever Variety Show. The timing was chosen to coordinate with the statewide Give to the Max day of charitable giving.

The five morning show hosts, who usually take one morning each from 7am to 9am, will instead each take a two hour shift in succession that day. Each will share their respective areas of interest and musical tastes as they do on their regular weekly shifts, as well as playing examples of programming offered throughout the week by the wide variety of both local and outside programs. Besides a day of low key on-air fundraising pitches for community radio on KTWH interspersed among a wide range of programming, they also plan to share information about other local non-profits, hoping that listeners will indeed be “giving to the max” on November 12.

Running throughout the day will be a friendly competition for who among the hosts can raise the most funds through both the Give to the Max website (GiveMn.org) and KTWH’s own website (ktwh.org), or from walk-in donations at the studio.

A highlight of the day will be the inaugural broadcast of the wildly popular Cabin Fever Reliever Variety Show produced last winter at the Harbor Theater in Two Harbors. The show was both a fundraiser for Two Harbors Community Radio and a chance to showcase our local talent and preview things you will hear on KTWH.  The show played to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd on a cold February night. The two hour show will be run as excerpts throughout the day on November 12, and will also be broadcast in its entirety on the evening of Saturday, November 14, from 7pm to 9pm.

The centerpiece of the Cabin Fever show was a production by the local No-see-um Radio Theater troupe, A Stranger in the House, a reenactment of a 1940’s radio production. This debut of local live radio drama will be featured between 6pm and 7pm on the 12th, including commentary by the actors who took part.

November 12 will be a day to showcase the variety of programming aired throughout the week on KTWH at 99.5FM and streamed at ktwh.org, and to celebrate the wide range of non-profits working on behalf of all of us in the Two Harbors area.

KTWH Program schedule

i Sep 12th 1 Comment by

You may view the KTWH program schedule below as well as a very brief description of the local programs and some of the non-local programs. Space does not allow for all the outside programs, but the music show titles are mostly self-explanatory.

In general, weekdays are a morning show from 7am to 9am, each morning with a different host and flavor. This is followed by music shows until noon, then community events for five minutes or so at noon. This is followed by 2 hours of talk and informational shows, including programs about books, public affairs, etc, including – most importantly! – a half hour of stories for little kids from 12:30 to 1:00pm.

From 2:00 to 6:00 is generally music programming from outside but unique sources, not heard elsewhere on the radio dial in our area. At 6:00 we repeat the community events announcements, and evenings are music shows hosted and curated by local programmers.

Dale at the controls

Dale at the controls

Youth-produced programs include Will’s Sports Wrap, a summary of recent and upcoming sports events in our community by Will Peterson, and The High School Show by Dale Peterson (no relation) – an update on happenings at the high school and some of Dale’s favorite music. These both run early Friday afternoons. If you want to bet on the sports events in this community, sites like 벳위즈 may be worth checking out.

Weekends include repeats of several of our programs, especially local ones, giving you more of a chance to hear things you would like, or to listen again to those especially good shows. Our music spans many different genres, so if you don’t like what you are hearing, try us at another time. You will certainly find something you like!
